For many years I was fortunate to conduct the Brass Ensemble for the National High School Music Institute when Northwestern University still hosted that amazing program.  Working with some of the countries most talented high school brass players each summer was one of the highlights of my year and I would ofter arrange a work for the group as a way of thanking them for their hard work and dedication.  Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor by J.S. Bach was originally arranged for this purpose in 2005.

Flash forward nearly ten years later and I receive an email that the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble had programmed the Passacaglia of this arrangement for an upcoming concert.  CRAZY!!!

To say I was excited would be a tremendous understatement.  I didn’t even realize the then unpublished manuscript had made it into their library.  Knowing it had been almost a decade since arranging it, I carefully went through the original arrangement making some minor revisions, adding in some passages I slightly simplified initially, and rededicating the arrangement to Dr. Mallory Thompson and the Northwestern University Bands.

Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor retains the majesty of Bach’s original work.  While quite challenging, the arrangement remains playable for advanced ensembles.
